Dewberry

Taking a wild fruit reminiscent of blackberries and creating a sherbet

Dewberry

I've never heard of dewberries but Mel's dad gave her a lot of dewberries that he picked. With an excess of berries, what does one do? Make sherbet of course!

Rating: 4.5 scoops

Dewberries are similar to blackberries (same family, according to my research). They taste similar, but I think they are a little more tart. They look to be about the same size as raspberries, but take a purple color rather than red. Compared to blackberries, they tend to grow along the ground (instead of a bush like blackberries) and when it's picking season, there are a lot! The bag of berries was labeled 10 cups.

I modeled this after a standard sherbet. A little buttermilk added some nice tang and chocolate chunks provided some textural contrast. I would think that anything that pairs well with blackberries would go well with the dewberry sherbet.
