Blood Orange

Taking advantage of the in-season citrus to make a sherbet.

Blood Orange

It's the middle of citrus season and I realized I hadn't gotten around to making an ice cream that takes advantage of the deliciousness. I had originally wanted to use cara cara oranges but I was unable to find any in the store so I settled for some vibrantly colored blood oranges instead.

This ice cream was good with a nice color, but it was overly tart. This may be due to the specific variety of blood oranges I was able to buy. I was also able to taste a hint of raspberry flavor behind the orange, which I appreciated for the layer of complexity it added.

This is a traditional sherbet recipe made with blood oranges. Juicing the blood oranges was a bit of a mess as the juice was spraying all over the place. I probably should have also used a plastic citrus juicer for this recipe as my wooden reamer is now stained a nice shade of light red. But it was worth it for this recipe!
